IZTACALCO CULTURAL CENTER - SAN MATIAS CHURCH.
This temple is Itzalco’s historic religious head. It was founded by the Franciscan Brothers in 1550 as a convent, and it became a church on November 2nd 1662. Inside the sacristy, there are paintings of San Juan Bautista and la Degollada, which according to some experts, could be Tiziano’s work. It has a baptismal font in a single piece carved in 1731. It is also possible to admire an image of Christ made with sugarcane bagasse. Its main celebration is called “del Santo Jubileo”, and it takes place from 19th to 22nd of August, when there is a display of gorgeous decoration with vegetables, flowers or fruit.
