Shopping and Artesanias (Artisanal Crafts) |

| Mexico City boasts numerous shopping districts that offer products and services catering to every taste and budget. You’ll find everything from well-known international designer boutiques along Polanco’s main drag to the eclectic Tianguis del Chopo market, where young punk-rockers, skateboarders and Goths shop and hang out. Exclusive shopping malls abound, like Centro Santa Fe to the west, as well as Perisur, Galerías Coapa, Plaza Universisdad and Centro Coyoacán. And if you’re looking for artesanías (artisanal crafts), these Mexican-made creations are sold at markets such as La Ciudadela and the Mercado San Juan, as well as in Coyoacán, the Zona Rosa and on Tamango Street in Peravillo. If you’re up for a truly out-of-the-ordinary experience, check out the Central de Abastos, Latin America’s largest open market (and one of the largest in the entire world) where millions of tons of fresh foods—among other products—are sold daily. Keep in mind this is a far-from-everyday experience and you may wish to go with someone who knows the city well. Finally, when you need cigarettes, batteries, something sweet or something to quench your thirst, you’ll find idiosyncratic little tiendas (convenience stores) on practically every corner, where prices are typically very low. |
